Modest Proposals
Ron's note to this Modest Proposal: This month, the newsletter takes a slight turn in voice. It came to me to try out a question and answer format to present the proposal. It is a kind of a one-way Socratic method of getting the material across. I tested it with a few people, the response was positive, and now I ask for your input as well. Thanks ---------------------------------------------- What is fear? Consider two explanations. One, fear is a real, tangible experience, the origin of which you cannot control - fear will occur - you simply wait for the right circumstances to appear. You wait for the mugger; you wait for the rejection; you wait for the disease to establish itself in your body. Two, fear is a construct of your mind - it only exists because you will it to exist. If you will fear into existence, then there is the possibility that you can will it not to exist. Which explanation of fear do you choose: one, it occurs outside of you, or two, you create it? Which of those choices reflects personal power? Personal power is your ability to manifest what you truly yearn for in your life. Personal power is not conferred; it is internally tapped and released. Personal power is leading your life, your way. Your life is your design, not someone else's, although you can give it away to someone else. Which explanation of fear do you choose now: one, it occurs outside of you, or two, you create it? What is about fear that affects you so strongly? There is always the possibility of harm to your body or ego. This possibility undeniably exists to one degree or another in every moment of life. The greatest harm that you can experience is death, to be recycled and start anew. Which explanation of fear do you choose now: one, it occurs outside of you, or two, you create it? How does the experience of fear limit your life? Think of aspects of your life that are denied to you or are severely limited because of fear. Fear creates a false sense of "safety" when you give in to it. There are other worlds to know and explore on the other side of fear. Which explanation of fear do you choose now: one, it occurs outside of you, or two, you create it? What is the nature of the Universe? It is either completely safe or completely dangerous, and both statements are true. Choosing that it is completely safe eliminates the need for fear because if you are a Divine being, your essence can never really be harmed, no more than the actor is killed or injured on the stage. Choosing that it is completely dangerous means that fear exists continuously; you are just not aware of it all of the time. Which explanation of fear do you choose now: one, it occurs outside of you, or two, you create it? Who are you in the matter of your life? Maybe you are reactive, taking your cues as to what to do from the situation that you are in, ensuring that your fears are acknowledged and respected. Perhaps you are proactive and choose your actions based on your true desires without the filter of fear coloring the unknown. Which explanation of fear do you choose now: one, it occurs outside of you, or two, you create it? Why is it that fear is in your life? Fear can serve as your teacher, or fear can be a burden that unrelentingly weighs you down. You can have growth or self-imposed martyrdom. Which explanation of fear do you choose now: one, it occurs outside of you, or two, you create it? What can you do about fear? The possibilities are to embrace it, release it, and thank it for the lesson, or you can entwine it around your neck and sink into the well of grief. Which explanation of fear do you choose now: one, it occurs outside of you, or two, you create it? What do you want to do about fear? Anything that you choose is all right. It is a matter of how you want to live. Explanation one provides endless reasons for why your life is not working. Option two enables you to live life fully aware and empowered. Which explanation of fear do you choose now: one, it occurs outside of you, or two, you create it? The essence of fear is that it is not productive. Fear destroys; it does not create. Do things happen that harm us? Yes, of course they do. Should our lives be based on experiencing fear because of the possibility of harm? I think not. There is potential harm, and there is the fear that surrounds whether or not the harm will occur. It is really the "not knowing" that creates the fear. Notice that once you know if you are going to be harmed (or not), the fear goes away. I cannot think of one time in my life that my fear resulted in something positive, something desirable. Can you? If you can't either, why continue to be fearful? When I was a small child, my father was in the US Navy. One day, my mother took me to a health clinic for an inoculation, my first. As the corpsman tried to get me to stay still to inject my arm, I cried and squirmed until he said, "It's over. I'm finished." Instantly I stopped my antics, and then he inserted the needle. OK, I "had been had" by his trick, but looking back at the incident, I realized that when I thought he had finished, the fear left instantly. There was a small amount of pain, but not enough to cause me to resume crying. My fearful "not knowing" of the actual harm was so much greater than the reality of the actual event. I never cried again before getting a shot, because there was no longer any "not knowing" around getting inoculations. Do they hurt" Yes, sometimes they do, but I "know" what to expect. There is no longer fear about getting a shot. My Modest Proposal to you is fear not. Fear not the Universe, our Earth, your nation, your community, your loved ones, and most of all, yourself. Try eliminating fear from just one small aspect of your life by realizing that it is the "not knowing" that creates fear. By practicing this one simple concept, you can release fear from your life. Whatever is left over after that deserves your attention, not the fear that surrounds it. Comments and counter proposals are welcome. Please email ron@RonMcCray.com.
