A Modest Proposal: Judge Not

The choice: Do you choose to continue to judge and be judged, or to accept the freedom of unconditional acceptance?

What does, "Judge not, lest you be judged," communicate to you? Judgment is an assertion of authority that has in fact no merit. We are all invested with Divine spirit, and there is no basis for asserting that we are individually inferior or superior to anyone else. The person who judges does indeed set himself up to be judged by others. Do you choose to continue to judge and be judged, or to accept the freedom of unconditional acceptance?

Is the color of someone's skin reason to judge him? Skin color is simply an evolutionary adaptation to varying degrees of the intensity of sunlight, nothing more. Peoples of all colors share in wisdom and stupidity, health and wealth, talent and ineptness, and success and failure. When flesh is rotted from the bone, no one can tell the original color of the person. Do you choose to continue to judge and be judged, or to accept the freedom of unconditional acceptance?

Does religious preference (or lack thereof) make one group superior to another? Religion is about control and, often, abuse of power. "Kill a commie for Christ," was a Vietnam era war cry. It seems that for many religions, the elimination of other religions is necessary for its own survival. Jihad and the Inquisition are "blood" brothers. The founders of all major religions said, in one form or another, love your fellow man. Makes one wonder what happened. Religion is man's bending of universal truth out of fear and greed. Do you choose to continue to judge and be judged, or to accept the freedom of unconditional acceptance?

Is one's sex or sexual preference reason to judge? Women are judged inferior because they are physically weaker, have different intellects, and bear the burden of reproduction and child rearing. Male homosexuals are somehow less than "real men," although they engage in every occupation as do "straight" men and with equal ability. Lesbians are scorned because they wish to bear and raise their own children, while single heterosexual mothers are pitied for the lack of men in their lives. Do you choose to continue to judge and be judged, or to accept the freedom of unconditional acceptance?

Are the materially wealthy superior, or do they just have more money? Money is the great differentiator in western culture. If one has great wealth, does he or she dwell on a different plane than those who live paycheck to paycheck? The wealthy are believed by many to have superior wisdom and to have been blessed by the universe more than fiscal underachievers. Some rich people die unhappy and frustrated. Some poor people die contented and fulfilled… and the outcomes are reversed for other members of both groups. It would seem that neither poverty nor affluence is a guarantee of a life successfully lived. Do you choose to continue to judge and be judged, or to accept the freedom of unconditional acceptance?

What then is the key to releasing judgment? First, realize that we all judge others and ourselves. Second, know that we will never stop judging altogether; judging is so ingrained in our development that I don't believe it is possible to strip it out of our psyches altogether. Third, as "The choice" question poses, unconditional acceptance instead of judgment enables us to see the playing field of life as level which it always has been. It is only our vision filtered through fear that sees it as tilted. We know when we are unconditionally accepting when we take the "but" out of our description of some person or event. "We would've won the game, BUT the referee was not fair." When I worked as a corporate trainer, one of my favorite admonitions to people in communication courses was, "Don't let your 'but' get in the way." Do you choose to continue to judge and be judged, or to accept the freedom of unconditional acceptance?

My Modest Proposal to you is to "judge not." Judgment is a social disease. Parents infect their children. Teachers infect students. Religious leaders infect their followers. Politicians infect their constituencies. Corporations infect their employees and customers. We all infect each other. We can inoculate ourselves against judgment with truth. Truth is what is left when manipulation, agenda, greed, fear, hate, and narrow mindedness are removed from the equation of daily living. The label on the bottle says, "WARNING - although this truth serum retards the occurrence of judgment, it is impossible to totally eliminate judgment from your system once infected. Repeated and frequent doses of this serum are highly recommended for best results. The contents have no expiration date."
